I rented the ebook for the semester. It does not come with an access code to the publisher's content (Launchpad) and Amazon won't give you one. If you need one, buy from the publisher's website directly. It's only $10 more and comes with the ebook and the access code. Now I have to pay for the book all over again on the publisher's website just to get the access code.

I purchased the access code here since it's about $20 cheaper than the publisher's website. At first I was panicked because when I was entering the code, the website was saying it didn't exist - but after going through the website's "help" articles, I found out that the codes never contain a 1 and if it looks like your's does, it's actually a lowercase L. After I figured that out, the code worked. So if you're panicking like I did - just change your 1 to an l :)

I used this edition instead of the newer 2nd edition for my Fall 2014 Developmental Psy class. The chapters are the same as the newer edition with the only differences being page numbers and a few pictures that were added. Buy the 1st edition, its much cheaper and there is very little difference between this one and the 2nd edition.

It's a great textbook. Well-organized and very informative. Was easy to study using the questions provided at the end of each section. Only for some reason, theere were a couple of sections, which didn't have any questions... There are also key terms provided at the end of each chapter, which makes the revision of the material easier, too.

I had a terrible experience with the eText / kindle version of this textbook. I rented this book for a psychology course I took online. Once I downloaded the book, I was unable to view every page. Originally I presumed that perhaps it was my operating system OS X that did not allow me to view every single page of the book. So, I tried to view the content via OS Android on my phone. Again, I was unable to view every page from the textbook. Realizing that I only had a fixed amount of time (summer sessions move much faster compared to regular semesters), I rented the hard copy version of this textbook. That was the life saver. Otherwise, I would have failed my class had I only relied on the kindle version of this book. I would recommend to go with the hard copy rental of the book. You can return the hard copy book after.In addition, I cannot find anywhere via this account where I can petition for a refund of the kindle rental of this book. I have been so busy with work and school that I did not have time to request a refund. To the publishers or distributors who are currently reading this message, please issue my account a refund for the kindle rental of this book. If by chance you are able to see how many times I attempted to use this kindle book, you will see that it was only during the first few days after the initial rental that I attempted to use this rental version. After, I lost hope. Please, issue a refund. Thank you for your time.Actual star rating: zero.

Keeps crashing my kindle app. I have no problems with any other books but this one in particular crashes frequently. Sometimes it doesn't turn pages back, instead it just repeats the same page over and over. other times there are entire pieces of the page that just don't show up until I close the book out and then reopen it.the content is useful and informative, but something is just not working. again, only happening for this book. no other books on my kindle app have any trouble remotely close to this.

On March 1, 1896, near the town of Adwa, in Ethiopia, an African army convincingly struck down the colonizing Italian army in a battle that decisively shaped not only the contours of Ethiopia but also its future and that of the continent. As University of Washington historian Jonas so deftly observes in this nimble and artfully crafted work, the events at Adwa cast doubt upon Europeans' unshakeable certainty that Africans would eventually fall under their rule. Jonas draws vibrant portraits of the personalities at the center of these events, from the shrewd Ethiopian monarch Menelik and his bold, aggressive wife, Taytu Betul, to the unfortunate Italian general Oreste Baratieri, the leader of the defeated Italian forces. As Jonas points out, the African victory at Adwa commenced the crumbling of European dominance of Africa; Ethiopia thus became a source of pride and lineage often indistinguishable from Africa itself, and writers such as W. E. B. DuBois based their own model African states on Ethiopia. Weaving a colorful account from the stories of a dazzling array of characters, Jonas skillfully recreates this now mostly forgotten event that determined the color of Africa.
