(I should mention that for fans of their equally successful futuristic version of the game, Warhammer 40,000, there exists a separate tome entitled "The Art of Warhammer 40,000".)I have been waiting YEARS for Games Workshop to do something like this! To tell you the truth I don't even play Warhammer, but it was this amazing art which graced the covers of their rule books and gaming-piece boxes, etc. which first grabbed my attention and got me interested in reading the novels and learning more about their universe.For someone like me who always loved Tolkien (yes, since way, waaay before those movies) and always wished he could find more set in the same kind of universe full of evil Orcs, stalwart Dwarves and noble Elves and Men, this was exactly what I had been looking for.Having spent many years digging up some of the old Warhammer rule books just to be able to appreciate the fantastic art contained therein, I can tell you that contained in this one single volume is about the best 80% of all the art that they ever produced (so far!).When I first got the book and flipped through it, at first I was a little disappointed to see that about 1/5 of the works here are in black and white. In fact this is a wonderful high-quality book with most of the works being highly detailed full-colour paintings, all printed on the highest quality stock.This has been an excellent purchase and I feel it was worth every last penny. I am happy to give this book my highest possible recommendation, and would recommend it not only to Warhammer fans but also fans of Tolkien, players of fantasy games like Warcraft and Dungeons and Dragons, and lovers of fantasy art in general.And for those of you who buy this book and find yourself wanting even MORE, I would also recommend the book "The Art of Clint Langely", one of Warhammer's finest artists.Games Workshop, keep the great art and novels coming, and I really hope you'll make a Volume 2 for this book someday. I love it!(And how about some 6" or 7"-scale action figures of these fabulous characters too? I love the character designs, but those tiny little gaming pieces of yours are just too small for me.)

A good "historical" review of the art of the Warhammer Fantasy battle universe for the last 2o+ years. I found myself recognizing the art and enjoying the book. Recommended for the Warhammer buff only though. Detailed art related to the gaming genre.

This hardcover collector's edition contains 224 pages by some of the most noted Warhammer artists. The art in this book has been culled from a number of sources including game supplements, rulebooks illustrations, book covers, etc...Warhammer fans are some of the most fervent fans there are, taking particular pride in not only the substance of the Warhammer world but also the style. The visuals are as important to Warhammer fans as anything which is why they spend countless hours meticulously painting miniatures. The graphics are what helped make Warhammer as popular as it is today with gaming items, books, miniatures, computer & video games, and more.The roll call of artists includes the great John Blanche, David Gallagher, Adrian Smith, Karl Kopinski, Geoff Taylor, Alex Boyd, and Paul Dainton. Each piece in the book give the name of the painting, the artist's name, the original source, and the year.I really love Taylor's "Dragonslayer" from the William King Novel of the same name showing a huge red dragon breathing fire onto an airship above snow-covered mountains. I also love the impossibly armored Engra Deathsword by Adrian Smith, about as intimidating of a figure as you'd ever care to see. Taylor's Chaos Knights are also quite stunning.Most of the book is in full color but there are some black and white illustrations as well, notably the Blanche pieces which are utterly dazzling in their incredible detail. Blanche's Citadel of Chaos has so much going on in it that you could spend hours gazing at it and continue to find new things you missed. Another standout piece is Paul Dainton's Tomb Kings, a two-page spread of skeletal warriors, some on skeletal mounts and chariots, marching forward into battle.Games Workshop always puts out great looking books and this one is no different. Warhammer is perhaps best known as a fantasy-themed miniatures game, and The Art of Warhammer represents visions associated with Warhammer-related projects. While I have never played the game (and, indeed, experience playing Warhammer is not at all necessary to appreciate this book), I was impressed by the artwork contained herein. Within the 220+ pages you will find a world similar to an Arthurian-style realm, but twisted and decidedly dark. Here are war-ravaged landscapes, chivalrous knights, sinister villains, revolting undead, stalwart dwarves, conniving goblins and more - all tinged with a sort of sinister patina of madness.The closest work I can liken it to are the paintings of noted fantasy artist Brom - but while even the fiercest of Brom's figures seem composed and at rest - in a sort of serene state - the art of Warhammer contained within this book seems to be filled with a frenetic energy - as though the world it depicts is but a few steps away from a descent into barbarism. While a fairly realistic medieval influence is pervasive in the art, elements of the early renaissance, as well as a fleeting steampunk mentality, also show up. While I cannot speak for fans of the game itself, lovers of fantasy art will no doubt find in this volume an intriguing, apocalyptic vision of a fantasy world on the edge. Recommended.

About the Author

Terryl Whitlatch is an accomplished, scientific and academically trained illustrator who extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for various zoos and museums in the US and The World Wildlife Fund as Senior consultant for Wildlife Art and Animal Anatomy. She is considered to be one of the top creature designers and animal anatomists working in the field today In a career spanning over 25 years, Terryl has many projects to her credit, including Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Special Edition, Jumanji 1 and 2, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Dragonheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Curious George, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. For over seven years, Terryl worked for Lucasfilm Ltd., Industrial Light & Magic and George Lucas' JAK Films. Her unique combination of illustration skills and comprehensive knowledge of animal anatomy and movement are essential components in the design, anatomy and physical animation aspects of believable creature creation. In her work on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, she worked directly with George Lucas for whom she designed countless creatures for the films and related products, including CD-ROMs. A collection of her work for Lucasfilm, The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide was published by Chronicle Books in 2001 to critical acclaim and popular success. Terryl also designed for many electronic and interactive games for leading publishers including Steven's Spielberg's The Dig, for LucasArts. Terryl has also worked with many major studios and effects houses as a highly sought after creature and concept designer. Clients include Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm, Ltd., Pixar, Walt Disney Feature Animation, PDI, Entertainment Arts, LucasArts, Chronicle Books, and various zoos and natural history museums. Terryl is also the author of “The Katurran Odyssey”, volume one of a forthcoming series “The Katurran Trilogy”.  This book made my face light up. Packed in this 160-page book is a collection of new artwork from Terryl Whitlatch. You won't see any of her Star Wars creatures that appeared in The Wildlife of Star Wars - you should probably get that book as well.The gallery consist of paintings and sketches of real and imagined animals. The designs for the imaginative creatures are beautiful and believable. There are sea, land and flying creatures. Great variety.Many sketches are included, some picked from her art classes. For selected creatures, they are so detailed separate drawings on the muscular anatomy and bone structure are included. Scribbled on the sketches are labels and notes, though a bit small but only because there's so much packed onto the page.Besides creature concept art, there are also stylized character designs. Rocket rhinos, psychotic pandas, comical cerberus, cupid frogs are just some of the many animated ideas. They are really fun to look at.This isn't an instructional book so there aren't pointers on how to draw, but you can get lots of ideas or understand what's possible just by looking at the drawings.This inspiring book is highly recommended to anyone who loves animal art.-There's a hardcover edition available: Animals Real and Imagined: Fantasy of What Is and What Might Be-(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Right when I saw this book I knew I needed to have it. However, due to personal experience I am weary about buying used books without feeling them first. But, like I said I NEEDED this book and like the impatient person I am I took the risk against my better judgment.I'm Glad I did.Not only did the book arrive way before I expected it to but the condition it came it was astonishing. Not only was it wrapped like it was a plate of gold but the book itself was in practically new condition. In fact, they could have put down that the book was new and I would have believed it.I absolutely wish I lived in California as I would take a trip and visit them in person to tell them how much I loved everything. I was hoping beyond hope that they were somewhere in my state so I could do so!And, not only that. But when I opened my book and glanced at my receipt, in the corner was a hand penned note that she hoped I was happy with my book. You have no idea!If I can give you any advice, if you ever order a used book online do so from these people. You will not be disappointed!As for the book itself it is a beautiful artist reference for creatures both real and imagined. Go figure. It is chocked full of colored/completed designs along with unfinished sketches detailing real animals, estranged creatures with cartoons/caricatures scattered here and there. I personally will be using it for reference and inspiration for my novels. But for artist I think it is in the 'must have' category. It is far from being extremely professional but it is beautifully defined and gives plenty of musculature and skeletal structures for all kinds of creatures -even humans. If you like imaginative bestiaries/reference books then give this one a once-over!

I've always been into the idea of mixing the features of difference animals to see what you get, so this is basically a whole book full of it. It starts off with some of Terryl's paintings of real creatures, then progresses more and more into her own creations. For the most part, the creatures are prehistoric in nature, but there are a few modern-day beasts represented. There are even some that are just straight up fantasy creatures. The last section of the book covers some of her animated characters and that's not really my cup o' tea. It's my only knock on the book. It seems out of place. If you're looking for background info on why she mixed this animal with that or whatever, you won't get it. And who cares, really? I don't need to know why she put ram horns on a gorilla, it just looks cool. I wish I had the hardback version because of the "widescreen" format of the book, but it is still an extremely high quality book. In fact, I would say it's one of the best printing jobs I've ever seen in an art book. The whites of the pages have a sort of matte finish to them, while the images themselves are printed glossy. It's hard to describe, but it looks excellent. it makes the images really pop off the page. I highly recommend this for anyone into dinosaurs and creature design.
