Through constant weekly counseling, a committed personal psychiatrist and a network of loving and supportive friends and family members, I am confident that I continue to do everything possible to find the strength, tools and ongoing hope that my son will be able to lead a productive and happy life. Mrs Saks has provided me with the insight into my son's daily struggles. He has come to a stage in his illness where he is sharing more and more of what is happening in his mind and we can discuss how he feels. After reading everything I can get my hands on, this personal biography with its explicit detail, has helped me cope and find answers to the ever-changing situations and challenges that are faced daily. My mother got involved in the mental health movement at an early age. Consequently, through her volunteer work and commitment to helping my grandmother who suffered for over 35 years, mother connected with mental health professionals who first experimented with lithium used for alcoholics and then those suffering from bi-polar. After the normal compliance issues, my grandmother's twilight years were peaceful and happy due to lithium. She lived out her life with grace and dignity. My hope is that my son, too, will find his way back from this disease and find a way to give back to society like Mrs Saks has done. She blew me away with her way of presenting to the reader the disorganized thinking that is typical of an individual with schizophrenia. And because of her ability to coherently give the reader insight to this pattern of thinking, you begin to understand why and how an individual could find themselves thinking the thoughts that they are.Elyn writes in a manner that makes it easy for you to feel like you are there with her, during her entire journey of trying to come to terms with her disease. You grow attached to some of her therapists and doctors, just as you are appalled at the behaviors of others. You feel her anxiety when having to change therapists, and hope the next one will be attune to her needs. Most importantly, you begin to understand why someone with her disease would be so focused on not taking any medicine. This is again, something that those of us who have never experienced such illnesses cannot even begin to understand.I definitely count myself lucky for having stumbled upon this book and it has given me invaluable insight on what it means to have schizophrenia and the harrowing journey that many who have this disease must face. Most importantly, I feel like I have a slightly better understanding of the disease itself and how it affects those who have it.Would recommend to anyone who is a fan of memoirs and is interested in finally having schizophrenia explained from the perspective of one affected by it.*Please remember that calling someone a schizophrenic is offensive for it makes the person and the disease one. When a person has cancer you do not start calling them cancerous, or say they are cancer, just as you should not call someone with schizophrenia a schizophrenic.

It's hard to find the words to describe how deeply touching this book is. Elyn Saks is a champion who has achieved so much in her life while having a huge, unpredictable albatross around her neck, schizophrenia. Her story is about the triumph of her intellect and spirit over a sometimes extremely unruly brain. She's a skilled writer: when she was fearful, I was too. When things went well, I was happy for her. When she achieved her goals I was so happy that the tears welled. It's a cliff hanger until the end and throughout the book I wondered "Will she be able to meet this challenge too? If you've ever wondered what it's like to live with schizophrenia, this book will provide a vivid account. It's a wonderful book and the Kindle text-to-voice worked perfectly. Elyn is great company and an inspiration. I'll be reading her book again.

Ronald B. Adler is Professor of Communication Emeritus at Santa Barbara City College. He is coauthor of Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication, Eleventh Edition (OUP, 2009), Looking Out, Looking In (2011), and Communicating at Work: Principles and Practices for Business and the Professions (2011).George Rodman is a professor in the Department of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, where he founded the graduate media studies program. He is author of Mass Media in a Changing World, Fourth Edition (2011), Making Sense of Media (2001), and several books on public speaking. Carrie Cropley Hutchinson is a professor in the Department of Communication at Santa Barbara City College, where she directs the Interpersonal Communication and Business Communication programs. She also teaches Intercultural Communication for the college's study abroad program. Professor Cropley is the author of Interpersonal Communication: Navigating Relationships in a Changing World (2010).

The textbook was a great aid during class. If you take the time to read the whole chapters and the examples provided, you will get a better grasp at the concepts and would not need to review the instructor's notes so much —at least, that was my case. I felt that the textbook provided enough information, and I used it in every single paper I wrote for my class, and it helped me a bit with other classes I was taking at the time.The organization of the textbook is really neat, which helps a lot when you are looking for a specific concept.This edition has almost the same as the newest one, only that the order is slightly different, and some exercises are missing. This edition worked just fine for me when I needed this book.

Moderately well-written and only beginning to be relevant, this textbook does well enough. I am using it in my Communications 101 course in college. It's somewhat dry and wordy sometimes, as text books are wont to be, and some of the theories expressed in it can come off as a little rigid, one-sided and some as downright quackery. Parts of it are quite interesting though - definitely recommended if you're wanting to go into something like social sciences or psychology at some point, but as somebody who is looking for practicality in a professional business environment, there isn't much here to interest or pertain to you. At least it's nice and cheap.

Required course text. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of the class I had to take. The material however was well presented, if you are interested in the 'science' of communication that is. Overall there were many crossover terms and a lot of vague definitions of terms or varying definitions / meanings for the same term which I greatly disliked.

I enjoyed the layout of this book. The chapters were easy to read even though most chapters were rather lengthy (20+ pages). I am keeping this book in my collection rather than reselling it. I think that the information inside will prove to continue to be of value for many years to come. I would recommend this textbook.

I don't understand why books like this are still printed. This must be insanely high profit for the writer/publisher. I feel like everything in this book is basically common sense that teachers feel the need to have printed in a pricey book.

It's an okay book. This book does provide some of the essential concepts in understanding how communication works, but lacks any real depth.

The tone of this book is either very condescending or is actually written for 12 year olds. Some of the sentences are constructed in such an obtuse way it is almost painful to read. If I didn't *have* to read this book for class, I definitely would never read it. The way that key terms are in italics instead of in bold/contrasting color/underlined makes it difficult to know what exactly one is supposed to glean from the work. Also, textbooks are extremely expensive and this one contains comic strips which I am sure are not free to use, making it that much frustrating to read. I really don't think that a "Cathy" comic strip is going to teach me anything about communication that isn't possible to just explain in plain text. It's not cute.

if there was a condensed version I still don't think i would read it. I passed my course by taking notes in class this book is long winded and by the time it gets to the point I lost the plot.
